Perhaps more than any other puppet based entity, The Muppets (and by extension Sesame Street) remain one of the great pop culture properties. The famed characters have long been able to push the boundaries of comedy for kids and adults. In fact, the group’s variety show, The Muppet Show, often took the variety show theme and applied to adult situations. While the brand has suffered in recent years, due in part to a rather terrible television show on ABC, it appears the Muppets are on their way back to the public soon.
With the impending launch of Disney+ in late 2019, many have questioned what the original content for the streaming service would look like. With shows like The Mandalorian already in the pipeline, it seems someone came to their senses. According to Splash Report, a collaboration of Josh Gad and the producing duo of Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz has spawned a new limited series Muppets Live Another Day. The production is slated to launch for the Disney+ streaming service this year. Kitsis and Horowitz are best known for their work on Once Upon a Time, a series that blended together large swaths of the Disney catalog. Gad’s involvement is particularly exciting, as the comedian has already created an iconic character for Disney as Olaf the Snowman
Muppets Live Another Day will be a period set show, picking up immediately after the events of The Muppets Take Manhatten. For some reason, the Muppets disband again, heading down their separate paths. When Rowlff, the loveable piano playing dog, goes missing, the gang reunites to find their lost friend. The news of the new series will come as a shock, but this sounds like the ideal way to bring back the group. They belong in a televised medium, and crafting a six to eight-hour story for the Muppets is better than a 22 episode season. This also gives the show an event feel. Without the pressure of a strong box office, or having to worry about ratings at all, our favorite gang of felt characters should be a welcome addition to TV in late 2019.
We’ll keep you updated as celebrity guests join the series. It’ll be curious to see if Gad himself will join the project. However, even if he does not, there will be plenty of humans willing to contribute to a story with the Muppets.
